Managing Construction Projects – Practical Experience in the Local Context
The aim of the workshop is to bring forward how one of the leading project management firms, within the local construction industry, which has evolved into a firm which provides a high level service within the local context, embracing all its positives and negatives and adapting international modes of practice to suit the local market needs.
Any change, irrespective of its magnitude, needs to be managed. We are many times led to believe that the secret to successful management is the adoption of nicely bound and packaged systems which are expected to provide a varied shopping cart with a template for each problem encountered. Many of us have been down this road only to find out that project management, particularly focusing on the construction industry, requires much more than a suite of systems, especially if, the desired end result is to be met.
Every country and/or region will have its own systems and/or practices, geared towards delivering projects effectively. There is no right way or wrong way but management is about understanding these cultural tendencies, accepting them, slightly adapting them if necessary, and working with them to achieve the final goal. Sight of the goal to be attained should never be lost. In essence, project management is an art. Models, methodologies and templates should be used as tools in a workshop, a means to the end, not the end in itself.
